After the roaring success of last year it is time for another fantastic Non-League Day. If you don’t know what that is…shame on you. More information coming in a second. Since today was pay day there was simply no excuse to try and arrange a game to watch on Saturday, after a quick tweet I was inundated with offers.

It’s great to see so many people going to different games. Where am I going? Ah that is the question.

For most people life is full of little moments that make everything worthwhile. It could be a homemade Sunday dinner with the family. Maybe it’s a cold pint after long day at work but for me its going to watch live football on a sunny Saturday afternoon, you just can’t be beat.

The main goal of Yorkshire Football Weekends was always to visit as many of the different grounds around the Yorkshire area as possible. During the week I was offered the chance to visit Hillsborough again to watch Sheffield Wednesday v Stoke City in the comforts of the press box. It would just be rude to say no wouldn’t it?

A new season is upon us and that means an endless amount of largely uncompetitive pre-season friendlies. Not today. A Yorkshire derby at Hillsborough you say, press box you say. Yes please! Leeds United making the short journey south to take on Sheffield Wednesday in what was billed as a pre-season “friendly”. High hopes that niceties would be thrown out the window on the M1.

To bring everyone up to speed, gibfootballshow towers moved location two weeks ago and is now based in Sheffield. A number of reasons for the move but the main thing is GFS has a new base camp and there could be more stories emanating from South Yorkshire this season.

Sheffield has two big teams who are going through a bad patch, with both teams in League One it could be a great season for a neutral to enjoy some football. However telling Mrs GFS, a life-long Blade (Sheffield United fan), that I would be going to Hillsborough did raise an eyebrow.

Making her gibfootballshow debut is – She tells us of the problem and the actions surrounding homophobia in German football culture.

On the pitch there are 22 strong physical men. There are two teams, and on each, 10 kick the ball around the field, one stays between the posts. The whistle blows, a red card is given. But to what you may ask?

To homophobia.

It was never in the Yorkshire Football Weekend constitution to return to any ground that had been reviewed in the same season that was until Bradford Park Avenue finished 3 rd in the Evo-Stik Premier Division and were paired with FC United of Manchester in the play-off semi-finals.

It seemed only fair that I would return to the Horsfall Stadium and not only give a local team my support but the opportunity to experience the FC United fans was one not to be missed. Straight after work I made my way to the station a quick train and bus journey and I was making my second visit to the King’s Head pub, luckily this time there was no EDL anywhere to be seen.

Another post work evening in Leeds train station, as usual it is full of business folk rushing round trying to get home as fast as possible. As I sit on the train bound for Doncaster most of my fellow travellers are engrossed in their laptops, to contrast I’m sat munching into some Barbeque crisps and two cans of Marks & Spencers finest cider. Oh yes ladies and gentleman this must be a Yorkshire Football (Mid) Weekend.

Afternoon Everyone.

Returned from the sunny island of Jamaica today, can’t say I’m glad to be back, but hey you’ve got to return to the real world eventually.

Pretty much had a two week break from football so no idea what’s been going on. Going to take me a week or so to get back into the mix. Podcast I hope will feature myself on Thursday, looking forward to getting behing the wheel again after the superb job that Charlie and Brent did in my absence. Hopefully the people will want me back.

While poolside drinking some rum I had so ideas about where to take the site, but that can wait for now.

Sort of glad to be back.

Andrew

Starting a new feature on gibfootballshow new writer Lee Garrity takes us to the second division in France. Each week Lee will be keeping us updated in everything that goes on in Ligue 2.

The race to join the French elite looks likely to go to the wire as before this weekend’s fixtures  any team outside the bottom four who can put a run of victories together will look at the table and think maybe , just maybe.

Leaders Le Mans held a 4 point gap between themselves and fourth placed Ajaccio and Les Manceaux ,who moved into the new 25000 capacity MM Arena just two weeks ago remain top courtesy of a 1-0 victory over bottom placed Grenoble, both teams were relegated from Ligue 1 last season but now find themselves heading in different directions. Norwegian International Thorstein Helstad’s 58 minute goal enough to give Le Mans the three points and take Helstad to the top of the scorer’s charts with 13 goals.
