On the pitch it has not been a good season for Stirling Albion they are currently seven games without a win, second bottom of the Scottish First Division, would be bottom if it wasn’t for Dundee’s point deduction. Let’s not dwell on the negatives though. Today Jocky Scott was announced as the new manager and he has a fight against his old club Dundee if he wants to keep them in the First Division. Jocky has a player in Gordon Smith that has the qualities to fire the team to safety.

Nineteen year old Gordon Smith is currently on loan from Hearts till the end of the season. has scored seven goals in fifteen games and if Jocky Scott can get Gordon back on the scoresheet regularly then Stirling will have a great chance of staying up.

Hi Gordon, Thank you for agreeing to do the interview. I wanted to first of all say congratulations on your season so far seven league goals is a tremendous effort. How have you enjoyed your time so far at Stirling Albion?

Cheers, it has been really good.  I have enjoyed playing every week with the boys.  They are a great laugh and it makes me want to win football games.

Do you know what your plans are after the loan spell ends at the end of the season? Is it likely you will return to Edinburgh and use your good form to try and earn your place in the Hearts team?

My plans after my loan period is to put pressure on the Hearts strikers, impress the manager and try play every week plus scoring goals.

Outside the Scottish First Division you are still an unknown quantity, how would you describe your style of play?

I am a striker who likes to get in the box and score goals.  I prefer receiving the ball into feet and laying it wide.  Scoring goals in the box of course.

What do you think your strengths and weaknesses are?

I think my strengths are scoring goals, being strong and challenging defenders.  I think my work rate is good and winning headers.  Weaknesses are my awareness of others around me and my left foot!!!

What players would you say you look up to or would like to aspire to?

I have always looked up to my brother Kevin, but players I aspire too are the likes of Wayne Rooney and Fernando Torres as they have everything a top striker should be.

Your still only young at 19, where do you see your career going, would you like to stay in Scotland or is there a possibility of following your brother down south?

I would like to stay in Scotland close to my family and friends.  Obviously I would love to play for Hearts as I have supported them all my life but when I’m older I would definitely consider a move down south.

You’ve played for Hearts in the SPL and Livi and Stirling in the First Division, in your opinion how big is the gulf between the two divisions?

They are both very physical leagues.  I would say the SPL has more quality on the ball when it comes to passing and dribbling.  There isn’t along gap between the top teams in the SFL and the bottom teams in the SPL.

There are lots of different opinions being banded around about the league’s reconstruction do you think Scotland would benefit from a 16/18 team top division, would it help players like yourself get a chance to play against the “big boys” or would it be too much too soon?

I don’t really have an opinion on this but I do know that a change is needed because teams are playing each other too often.

Last question, little bit of fun. If you could sign any striker to play alongside you, who would it be?

It would be Wayne Rooney because he doesn’t only score goals but sets them up and his movement would create lots of space for me to get the ball too!!!!!

Thank you very much for talking the time to answer these questions, it is very much appreciated.

No problem!!

Massive thanks to Gordon for taking the time to answer the questions, and to my good friend Louise for sorting it out. Stirling’s game against Dunfermline on Saturday has been postponed but the next time Stirling play, I think I might go put a few quid on Gordon to score.

It’s grand to see you scoring the number of goals you have this season when chances are so scarce!!!

You should have taken the penalty kick against Partick Thistle as it was your iniative that created the award!!!

Keep up the good work!!!!
