And then there was four….well that is until now, I have made my decision. Can’t just blurt it out though, and I feel I owe everyone that has voted and commented reasons as to how I came about my decision.
I’ve read a brief history of all the clubs, played games with them all on PES 2011. And then I went about writing down my Pros and Cons of supporting each club. Which I will share with you now.
A club with a fantastic history and club that has Maradona in its list of former player is surely a club worth following. They also currently boast some of the most exciting players in Serie A. Marek Hamsik, Edison Cavani and Ezquiel Lavezzi to name a few. They play a different brand of football compared to most other teams. Not many teams go for 3-4-1-2 these days so it is exciting to watch. Also any game at the Stadio San Paolo can provide a fantastic atmosphere and superb home support.
In a way I feel like I would be jumping on the bandwagon of recent success. Currently flying high only three points off Milan at the top of Serie A. One of the criteria I was looking at was the “derby” factor. My two other teams Celtic and Lille have passionate derbies that I have really enjoyed watching. Napoli’s derby match is the Derby del Sole played against Roma. Without knowing the history I find it hard to believe in a derby where the other team has a bigger rival. Can Napoli ever overtake the battle for the eternal city, I doubt it.
The other derbies with Lazio, Verona, Salernitana and Avellino just don’t jump out at me as passionate. Overall a very good team and one that would be a joy to support.
The outside bet if you will, looking through the squads I recognised more Udinese players than in the other three teams, obviously Alexis Sanchez is the star man and would be a delight to cheer on, but for how long. There are quite a few young talents in Udine and they seem to have a knack for finding these gems. However Udinese seems very happy to sell these talents on to the highest bidder. Perennial underachievers I am not sure they seem on a road that is progressing anywhere.
It would be a great team to support with the amount of talent there, but it is talent you will always be saying goodbye to.
The first thing I liked about La Rosanero was the fact that apart from a couple of Serie B titles they haven’t actually picked up any significant silverware. So if I was to join the Pink & Black journey I would be around hopefully for moments of history be it Coppa Italia, Europa League or even the Scudetto itself.
They have a very bright young team, the little gem that is Javier Pastore would be a joy to watch most weeks and the team is full of young prospects. They have a decent looking stadium the fans are full of passion for their side and I think I could convince Mrs GFS to go a wee holiday there.
I have reservations over wearing pink; I never have so that would be a step into the unknown. The other negative point I worried about is the selling policy that seems to exist quite a few quality players have left Sicily in recent times and I could see this continuing.
La Viola, a club steeped in history, so many great players that I feel in love with. Batistuta, Baggio even Luca Toni in recent times. Then the fairytale comeback story as the team went into the abyss. Former Celtic keeper Artur Boruc is there (not sure if that’s good or bad). They have a great team right now, maybe not playing to their potential but the quality is there. And of course the Stadio Artemio Franchi is one of the most iconic stadiums in football.
The big disappointment for me is the lack of a proper derby match. Unless Pisa pulls their socks up maybe only the match against Juventus sparks any derby feelings. Current manager Sinisha Mihajlovic has never seemed like a very nice person to me, so not sure I could cheer on his side. And the last reservation I have is that Fiorentina already have one extremely passionate Scottish fan….do they really need another.
So there we go all four teams have reasons I could fall in love with them, but also reasons to stay away. I have however picked my team, through all my thinking and debating last night, one teams name kept coming back into my mind more than any of the others. I like the name, the history; they have a unique kit some fantastic players.
Did I mention my favourite all time WWF wrestler was Bret “The Hitman” Hart.
If you haven’t got it yet…can I have a drumroll please?

If you didn’t get that reference then to make it simpler I have decided to throw my considerable weight behind LA ROSANERO….U.S. Città di Palermo are my new club…AQUILLE!!!!!
Fair choice Andrew, and I enjoyed this little series you’ve done!
Although I voted for Fiorentina, you can’t argue with a man who’s voted for the club of Javier Pastore – a fine player he’ll turn out to be.
Cheers Kevin, yeah it turned out a lot bigger than I ever thought it would, can’t thank everyone enough for their votes and comments.
Pictures of a fat Scot in a pink strip will follow!
GIB!!!!!!!!! Woke up to this news and it made my day!!!
WELCOME ABOARD SIR!
Happy to be aboard mate, looking forward to your guidance in the ways of La Rosanero
Shit, that makes me a Cagliari fan.
Surely your a Catania fan?
As a Siracusa fan, I’m bound to say the pink strip will be the very least of your problems. For the authentic Palermo experience, you’ll now have to adopt Juve as your second team
would technically be my fourth team….did realise that was a requisite for being a Palermo fan
A very enjoyable piece – or series. Thanks!
Cheers Rob, wasn’t intended that way, but been really enjoyable reading everyone’s suggestions and reasons why.
Looking forward to getting behing the team now. Got loads of research to do.
Great stuff, now make a writeup on how to help others decide their Ligue 1 team. I don’t have one and need one!
Ah Josep good choice to follow a Ligue 1 team, go to the contact us page and send me an email, i will help!
An excellent choice. Welcome to Palermo. I’m sure you will grow to love this team as much as I have. Never a dull moment with many exciting talents and a very determined and outspoken President. I suggest you ease yourself into wearing pink slowly by perhaps opting for the ‘third’ alternate short which is mainly black with a bit of pink. But soon enough you’ll be standing proud in in the first choice pink jersey. FORZA PALERMO!!
