So first of all I would like to thank everyone for reading/voting and commenting on the last piece. I have been blown away by the response and in all honesty it has made my task incredibly difficult. After Roma’s strong start Fiorentina and Juventus have come back strong and as we speak it is La Viola who sit top of the table. Well done to everyone who voted for Fiorentina.
I am pretty sure I have narrowed it down to 4 teams that I will sleep on and make a decision. Before I get to who I have left, I will explain who has been let go.
“The Old Lady” Juventus got 14% of the vote and so many strong arguments to follow them. So many good players and such a superb history. Great piece on the Juventus Offside giving 10 reasons to be a Juventus fan and there’s not many of those points I can disagree with.
And it is not for “footballing” reasons that Juventus will not be my team. With the wonderful people on twitter like Adam, Mhairi, Aaron and Lars I just don’t want to be part of their team. I think I would have much more fun being against them. Being Scottish I am a fan of a bit of banter, so I look forward to my future team’s battles against Juventus.
Another three teams ruled out are Genoa, Chievo and Cagliari although all three are good teams I just can’t see me following them. Chievo come close with the wonderful “Flying Donkeys” story it’s a wonderful tale but the quality of football is just not there. And from the games I have watched this year I am going to tar Genoa and Cagliari with the same brush, although Cagliari have Biondini and you’ve got to love an Italian “ginger”.
Lazio lost out in my support from basically the lack of votes or even any positive comments. And when you get a message saying, “If you don’t choose Parma go for Samp or Fiorentina but you can’t go for the big four, that’s too easy or the racists Lazio.” I don’t at all believe if you’re a Lazio fan you’re a racist fan, but the lack of support towards il Biancocelesti led me away from their side.
With Juventus ruled out and Lazio ruled out in my mind I wanted to stay away from any kind of glory supporter. There was plenty of support for Milan, Inter and Roma but I don’t want to jump on an already existing band wagon, it would be far too easy to pitch up at the San Siro follow one of the Milan sides and enjoy the success and the football. I wanted to make things a little more interesting though.
It’s really really harsh but Roma get ruled out 1) Out with Milan, Inter and Juve they are one of the bigger teams in my eyes. 2) I have always had a bit of a dislike for Totti, not as a footballer but from a personal point of view. Hard to explain just someone makes me dislike him (sorry Roma fans!) and 3) From my history of collecting football kits I have never ever been able to buy a Roma kit due to their obsession with extremely tight Kappa jerseys, although I’ve been told they make them bigger, it’s always stuck in my mind and puts me off.
So we’re down to six and I said I had narrowed it down to four. So who’s going to go next? It’s Parma unfortunately. I love the colours and there are some great players from the past. Who can’t love Gianfranco Zola and Hernan Crespo? There was a wonderful comment left saying: “ I turned up on Parma’s front door at the Tardini unannounced in 1994 and was given a one hour guided tour, dressing rooms everywhere and the general manager even gave me a lift back to my hotel! Would any other club do that?”
Back in my Italia 90 days Parma were a superb club, with Ariel Ortega, Juan Seba Veron the list of former players reads like a who’s who. Unfortunately the good times have yet to return and since their return from Serie B they have done really well but they seem just to be lacking what I would want now to spark my interest more in the league.
Last to go and it really was a tough decision is Sampdoria. Good team, memorable jersey, so many good players Vialli, Gullit, Platt etc. Pazzini now is superb, the exciting loan move for Federico Machedo and Angelo Palombo give you so many reasons to like this club however I think the loss of the always entertaining Antonio Cassano makes it hard to see where they go from here. How long till Pazzini goes and the team is weakened again. Not one for going forward.
So we are down to four Fiorentina, Palermo, Napoli and Udinese. There are so many great reasons to pick either of these exciting clubs. I think after the amount of info and reasons given to me to pick one of these four clubs, it is only fair that I sleep on this and decide tomorrow.
Until the morning…..Ciao!!!!
PART 3 – A decision has been made….
Scrap the poll and scrap Serie A, it has to be Pro Vercelli!

A decent choice of four, I’ll carry on being a racist.. I mean, err.. Lazio fan, regardless!
@Chris I’ve been reading that runofplay Pro Vercelli series at work to keep me going. Wonderful.
If you wanted to be a real glory hunter you could support Genoa until they win their 10th title (and get their star), pretending you’d been there the whole time.
Wow cheers Chris, I had no idea Brian had done that, read a few of them now and that’s an amazing achievement.
Can’t go against my viewers now!
haha I look forward to watching my new team playing yours and we can have some banter Rocco.
To be honest Gib, I think it comes down to Napoli or Palermo – the two most passionate fan bases in all of Serie A. They are both southern clubs and currently have similar objectives. Udinese has an exciting team, but nobody in Udine seems to care! They’re content simply on surviving in Serie A and that’s it.
To me, the trio of Cavani, Lavezzi & Hamsik is beat by the trio of Miccoli, Pastore and Ilicic. I mean, after all, we gave up Cavani and still have the third best attack in the league (without ONE penalty to boot!).
Sure, we have a nutcase for a president, but that just makes things interesting. And for the win? Palermo has arancine.
Fiorentina… a very well run club considering where they have come from. They have set a new model for Italian football of Fair play and wage structuring.
Not having the greatest season thus far but I think they still have potential to climb the table.
I’m interested to know who voted Viola and why?
I voted Viola as I have supported them through the days of Rui Costa, Batigol. Then Di Livio, ‘il soldatore’when we rose up through the leagues.
Should never have been relegated… awful decisions were made against Fiorentina but its made them the club they are now and I am proud of their recent achievements.
I support Udinese, though I can’t really recommend that to you unless you, like me, have a grandmother who left Friuli for Canada 90 years ago. Failing that, what you’d get is a really well-run club with a brilliant scouting system, full of great little-known who make occasional exciting pushes for Europe, then losing there best players to bigger clubs and needing to start all over again. Alas.
Doubt I can promise silver, but you’d enjoy a certain moral satisfaction. If you’re into that sort of thing.
Thanks Michael, unfortunately I have no family ties to any Serie A clubs, that’s what makes this such a hard decision.
Though he belongs to the dark side, the Force is unusually strong with him!
If I went Purple would I not just be known as “the other scottish viola fan” noone can surpass Giancarlo!
Not a great believer in synergies, eh? But maybe you’re right; the mere thought that there’d suddenly be TWO scottish viola fans does seem a bit crazy…
As the great Christopher Lambert said in the epic Highlander “There can be only one!”
Interesting way of ruling out Juventus, but it meant you looked past all the big teams which is great.
Udinese a left field choice with an awful awful shirt, other three great selections & hope I can help you out later!
The only club South of Rome to ever win the scudetto. The underdog of all underdogs. The best supported team outside of Milan and Rome (even when they were in Serie B).
FORZA NAPOLI!
Fiorentina are the team of choice. They have a great legacy for playing classy football in their unique violet kit.
They are the choice of the romantic conniesuer.
[...] And then there was four…. [...]
